  • United Nations celebrates Global Day of Parents on 1st of June every year to honour all the parents throughout the world.
  • It recognizes the primary responsibility of the family in nurturing and protecting their children.
  • It emphasizes on the critical role of parents in the rearing of children.
  • The day was designated by the General Assembly in 2012 to honour all the parents throughout the world.
  • Theme: “Appreciate all parents throughout the world”.

June 01 – World Milk Day:

  • The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Milk Day every year on 01st June to recognize the importance of milk as a global food, and to celebrate the dairy sector.
  • This year, the day was celebrated with a “Enjoy Dairy Rally” that commenced on 29th May 2020 and culminated with World Milk Day i.e. on 01st June 2020.
  • Theme: “20th Anniversary of World Milk Day”

May 31 – World No Tobacco Day:

  • World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World No Tobacco Day every year on 31st May to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic including the preventable death and disease it causes.
  • The World Health Organization is celebrating the World No Tobacco Day every year since 1987 on 31st May.
  • This year, the celebration of day will aware the public on the risks of using tobacco, the business practices used by the tobacco companies to attract youth, the efforts made by WHO to fight the tobacco epidemic, and how people around the world can claim their right to health and healthy living in order to protect future generations.

Yes Bank Acquires 24% Stake In Dish TV After Invoking Pledged Shares:

  • Yes Bank, after the invocation of pledged shares, has acquired 44,53,48,990 equity shares of Dish TV India constituting approximately 19% of the post-issue paid-up share capital as at March 31, 2020.

GoI approves Rs 445 crore for Chhatisgarh to implement Jal Jeevan Mission:

  • The Government of India has approved Rs 445 crore for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Chhatisgarh in 2020-21.
  • The Chhattisgarh government has prepared a roadmap to achieve 100% Functional Tap Water Connection (FHTC) by year 2023-24 under which it will provide tap connections to 20 lakh households out of the total of 45 lakh households in the State.
  • The state has prioritised to focus on water scarce areas, SC/ ST dominated habitations/ villages, quality-affected areas, Sansad Adarsh Gramin Yojana villages, aspirational districts.

Carat India appoints Anita Kotwani as its Chief Executive Officer:

  • Anita Kotwani has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Carat India, a media agency owned by Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN).
  • Taking over as CEO of the media agency, she will work towards Carat India’s strategic progress and business growth nationally.
  • She will also help the media agency to deliver enhanced integrated solutions to clients by focusing on developing and leading significant tools as well as capabilities within the agency.

Arun Singhal becomes Chief Executive Officer of FSSAI:

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Arun Singhal as Chief Executive Officer of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
  • He is currently serving as the special secretary to the department of health and family welfare.
  • FSSAI is the food regulatory in India which is in charge for setting up standards for the food industry and also to regulate the manufacturing, storage, distribution, sale, and import of foods.

PR Jaishankar becomes Managing Director of IIFCL:

  • The appointments committee of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of PR Jaishankar as the Managing Director of India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd.
  • Some other appointments include: Vasantharao Satya Venkata has been appointed as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) for Small Industries Development Bank of India.
  • Harsha Bangari has been appointed as DMD of Exim Bank. Sunil Kumar Bansal has been appointed as DMD of IFCI Ltd.

SEEDS – Delhi-Based NGO Wins WHO Award:

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has conferred the World No Tobacco Day Award 2020 to the Socio-Economic and Educational Development Society (SEEDS), an NGO, for its efforts to ban pan masala, gutkha, e-cigarettes and hookah in Bihar and Jharkhand.
  • SEEDS are among the 3 awardees from the South East Asia region.

Virat Kohli Only Cricketer In Forbes’ 2020 List Of World’s Highest Paid Athletes:

  • India Skipper Virat Kohli is the only cricketer to feature in Forbes’ list of the top 100 highest paid athletes in the world for the year 2020. Kohli is ranked at number 66 with estimated earnings of $26 million.
  • Tennis legend Roger Federer has topped the list for the first time with earnings of USD 106.3 million, rising from fifth place last year.
  • Football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are second and third respectively with earnings of USD 105 and USD 104 million.
  • The others in the top-10 are Neymar (football), LeBron James (basketball), Stephen Curry (basketball), Kevin Durrant (basketball), Tigers Woods (golf), Kirk Cousins (American football) and Carson Wentz (American football).

Kerala To Launch Free Internet Project K-FON In December:

  • Kerala State government has announced the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) project will be commissioned by December 2020.
  • The project aims to provide free internet access to the poor in the State.
  • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the decision after a meeting with the heads of companies of the consortium.

PM Modi launches Video Blogging contest “My Life My Yoga”:

  • A Video Blogging Contest titled “My Life My Yoga” (also called “Jeevan Yoga”) has been launched by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • “My Life My Yoga” is a joint effort by the Ministry of AYUSH and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
  • The contest is open to all participants across the world. The participants will be able to submit their entries via various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Ravi Shankar Prasad launches program “Responsible AI for Youth”:

  • National Program for the youth titled “Responsible AI for Youth” has been launched by the Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology, Communications and Law & Justice, Ravi Shankar Prasad to empower the youth of India with appropriate new age tech mind-set, hence making them digitally ready for the future.
  • The program has been rolled out by National e-Governance Division, Ministry of Electronics & IT in collaboration with Intel India, along with the support from Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), Ministry of Human Resource Development.

National “Artificial Intelligence Portal” of India launched:

  • Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Law and Justice and Communications, Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched the National “Artificial Intelligence Portal” of India called “ai.gov.in”.
  • It has been jointly developed by Ministry of Electronics and IT along with IT Industry.
  • It would be responsible for sharing of resources like articles, investment funds in AI, startups, companies, resources and educational institutions related to AI, and hence will act as a one stop digital platform for AI related developments in India.

‘One Sun One World One Grid’: India Initiates Talks On West To SE Asia Solar Grid:

  • India has come up with a ‘One Sun One World One Grid’ (OSOWOG) initiative to set up a framework for facilitating global cooperation in this regard aiming at building a global ecosystem of interconnected renewable energy resources that can be seamlessly shared.
  • The Union Ministry of New and Renewable energy (MNRE), through this initiative, plans to build global consensus about sharing solar resources among more than 140 countries of West Asia and South East Asia.

Singer & music composer Wajid Khan passes away:

  • Singer & music composer Wajid Khan passed away.
  • He was renowned for his partnership with his brother Sajid and the duo was known as “Sajid-Wajid” who made their Bollywood debut in 1998 with movie Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya and went on to work in various films such as Garv, Tere Naam, Tumko Na Bhool Payenge, Partner and various others.
  • Wajid Khan also mentored the participants of singing reality shows “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2012” and “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar”.

  • Finally, it was on 2nd June 2014 when Telangana was inaugurated as a separate State and Sri K Chandrashekhar Rao became its first Chief Minister.

Moody’s Investors Service downgrades India’s sovereign rating to ‘Baa3’:

  • The sovereign rating of India has been downgraded by the Moody’s Investors Service from “Baa2” to “Baa3” citing the challenges faced by India in implementing the policies in order to reduce the risks of a sustained period of low growth and deteriorating fiscal position.
  • “Baa3” is the lowest investment grade that is just a notch above the junk status.
  • It has also expected contraction by 4% in the India’s real GDP in fiscal 2021, due to the shock from the coronavirus pandemic as well as the related lockdown measures taken by India to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • A disinfection unit named as “Ultra Swachh” has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to disinfect a wide range of materials such as electronics items, fabrics, Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) etc.
  • It has been developed in compliance with International Standards of Industrial, Occupational, Personal and Environmental Safety.
  • It comprises of Ozonated Space Technology and uses the advanced oxidative process for disinfection process.

SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying NASA astronauts docks:

  • NASA astronauts Robrt Behnken and Douglas Hurley docked the SpaceX capsule with the International Space Station (ISS).
  • SpaceX’s Falcon 9 with Crew Dragon capsule – Endeavour launched from Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida.
  • Now SpaceX became the first private company to fly astronauts into orbit.

Raveesh Kumar becomes new Ambassador of India to Finland:

  • Raveesh Kumar has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Finland.
  • He is presently serving as the Joint Secretary in the Ministry. He is an IFS officer of 1995 batch.
  • He will replace Vani Rao as the next Ambassador of India to Finland.

Sushil Singhal appointed India’s next High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea:

  • Sushil Kumar Singhal has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the technology platform CHAMPIONS to create the smaller units big by solving their grievances, encouraging, supporting, helping and handholding.
  • CHAMPIONS stands for Creation and Harmonious Application of recent Processes for Increasing the Output and National Strength.
  • It is a real one-stop-shop solution of MSME Ministry.

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the ‘COVID-19 Technology Access Pool’ for equitable access to life-saving tech.
  • This has been launched after the request from at least 37 countries who jointly appealed to the World Health Organization for common ownership of vaccines, medicines and other diagnostic tools to combat the global health crisis.
  • C-TAP aims to accelerate the development of vaccines and medicines through the sharing of research and information and to increase manufacturing capacity for any products that are developed.

IMD Reports ‘Cyclone Nisarga’ over Arabian Sea:

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the cyclonic storm Nisarga has turned into a depression in the Arabian Sea.
  • The storm is expected to hit Maharashtra and Gujarat on June 3. This cyclonic storm could be the first tropical cyclone in 129 years to hit Maharashtra in the month of June.

Kiren Rijiju inaugurates “Khelo India e-Pathshala” programme:

  • Khelo India e-Pathshala programme has been inaugurated by the Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Kiren Rijiju.
  • The programme has been launched by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in collaboration with National Sporting Federations (NSF).
  • It is India’s first ever National-level open online coaching and education programme for the grassroot level athletes across India.

Former Olympic sprint champion Bobby Morrow passes away:

  • American sprinter, Bobby Joe Morrow who won three athletics gold medals at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, passed away.
  • He won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay in Melbourne, becoming the first man only after fellow American Jesse Owens (1936) to win sprint treble.

Former Union Minister & social worker P Namgyal passes away:

  • Former Union Minister and three-time Congress MP from LadakhP Namgyal passes away.
  • He has served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Surface Transport and Chemicals and Petro chemicals.
  • He was the member of the then Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council from 1960-73 and then from 1974-80, and later served as the union deputy minister in the Central Government between 1988-89.

Archery coach Jayantilal Nanoma passes away:

  • Former International Archer turned coach Jayantilal Nanoma passed away.
  • He was an Asian Cup and Asian Grand Prix medallist in compound individual and team archery in 2010.
  • After becoming archery coach, he produced several national and international level archers from Rajasthan, and also worked as a coach of Indian team in various overseas competitions.
